Carbon Budgeting for Liverpool

July 3, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Zero Carbon Liverpool, the 2030 Hub, The Merseyside Environmental Trust, Energy Project Plus and Liverpool Friends of the Earth invite you to this event where you can learn, directly from one of the team, about a free tool, released by the Tyndall Centre which enables Local Authority areas to calculate their carbon budgets.

In March 2018, the Tyndall Centre produced the SCATTER report for Greater Manchester (Setting City and Area Targets and Trajectories for Emission Reduction). The report calculatd a carbon budget for Greater Manchester, quantifying the implications of the Paris agreement, taking the IPCCs global carbon budget and breaking down that down to the city-region level.

Since then, the UK government has committed to a net-zero target for 2050, and there has been an awakening of public consciousness about the reality of our climate change predicament, with many local authorities including our own Metro-Mayor declaring that we are in a climate emergency.

What practical steps can we take? One could be to follow Manchester’s lead and ascertain what our carbon budget is at the local authority level and across the City-region, and when we need to aim for net-zero. We can then begin making a data driven, science-based plan for how will achieve those goals.

Chris Jones from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research will present on setting local climate change commitments and how these commitments can be taken forward into carbon mitigation plans. The focus of the talk will be on how the latest scientific evidence from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the objectives of the United Nations Paris Agreement on climate change are used to produce carbon budgets for local authority areas within the UK. The talk will include an overview of a new free online tool for local authorities to calculate their own carbon budgets that are a fair contribution to staying within the objectives of the Paris Agreement to keep the global mean temperature well below 2C and pursuing efforts to 1.5C . There will also be an opportunity to find out more about the next steps in moving from setting commitments to implementing carbon mitigation plans such as through the SCATTER tool.
