Global Goals Hackathon for Girls
September 8, 2018 @ 9:30 am - September 9, 2018 @ 5:00 pm
iamtheCODE’s mission is to build a generation of 1 million women and girls coders by 2030. Through technology and digital literacy training, they are tackling the current global STEM skills shortage, especially in marginalised communities.
The Global Goals Hackathon event is on September 8th and 9th for girls from all backgrounds and experiences of coding (from none upwards) aged 11 – 18.
The girls will be invited to explore problem solving through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (or Global Goals) to make the world a better place.
Girls experiencing higher levels of social exclusion are our primary target group as we aim to reach the ‘furthest behind first’ in accordance with the ethos of the Global Goals, but all girls are warmly welcome to attend.
Schools are encouraged to send groups of girls with support available for transportation costs, and food supplied at the event.
Created by the award-winning Senegalese-born British technologist, Academy Member of the Global Teacher Prize and Young Global Leader, Mariéme Jamme, the iamtheCODE movement is designed to promote access in the area of STEAMED (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, arts, entrepreneurship and design) in young girls and women.
Girls from across the Liverpool City Region will be presented with global citizenship challenges, practice Design Thinking, explore the Kano Computer Kit, the iamtheCODE iDEA Curriculum, compete and create with technology and code. In partnership with Unilever, the event is aligned with its vision of a new way of doing business.
Preferably we would like teachers and parents to accompany school groups, but girls are also invited to attend individually as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
There will also be computer prizes for school groups or individuals, and free ice cream all day on both days!
The outcomes from this and the previous event are due to be presented at the United Nations General Assembly at their headquarters in New York only days after this event!
